Deborah Ekusai Sebatta

I am a passionate social scientist with a strong focus on bioethics and research methodology. Currently, I am in the final stages of my PhD in Bioethics at Makerere University, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, where I am researching the regulation of data sharing in human collaborative genomics research. As a Research Methods Scholar in the 2023 Leaders of Africa cohort, I am dedicated to advancing ethical and rigorous research practices.

Over the years, I have led and contributed to numerous research projects, particularly in infectious diseases, clinical trials, and health systems research. I have worked with institutions such as the Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration (IDRC), Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), and Makerere University, where I have served in roles ranging from Social Scientist to Principal Investigator. I am also a Research Ethics Committee Member at the School of Biomedical Sciences, ensuring that research protocols uphold the highest ethical standards.

Beyond research, I have a strong background in qualitative data analysis and have trained researchers and graduate students in NVivo and qualitative methodologies. I have also presented my work at prestigious international conferences, including the Human Genomics Conference, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), and the International AIDS Society (IAS).

My contributions to global health research have earned me multiple honors, fellowships, and travel awards, allowing me to engage in international collaborations. I am passionate about shaping ethical research practices, mentoring young researchers, and influencing health policy.

When I am not conducting research, I enjoy participating in professional associations, engaging in discussions on public health ethics, and contributing to scientific publications. My ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between research, policy, and practice to improve health outcomes globally.
